Aalst is the birthplace of the novelist Louis Paul Boon. The city is known for its annual carnival, as well as its many churches. Within a few kilometres of the Ibis Hotel Aalst Centrum lies the Sint-Martinus church, where you can see Rubens’ famous painting 'Saint Roch beseeching Christ to terminate the Plague at Aalst'.The belfry is part of the sheriffs’ courtroom Schepenhuis on the Grote Markt and is featured on the UNESCO World Heritage List, together with a number of other Belgian belfries. Other places worth visiting are the town hall, the beguinage and the Beurs van Amsterdam.
