The Royal Park and Royal Square are situated on the site where the medieval court of Brabant used to stand. This enormous palace dated from the 11th century. In September 1830 the Royal Park became the cradle of the Belgian independence. In the middle of the square is a statue of Godfried van Bouillon, leader of the first Crusade in 1096. On the corner of the Royal Square are the Museum of Ancient Art, as well as the Museum of Modern Art. About 300 metres from the hotel is the Column of Congress. In front of the Column burns an eternal flame for the Belgian Unknown Soldier.
