Hotel Schimmelpenninck Huys Groningen

Hotel details:

Hotel Schimmelpenninck Huys has a rich history that dates back to the 12th century. The hotel is listed as one of the ten most important historic monuments of the city and owes its name to Rutger Jan Schimmelpenninck, the Grand Pensionary of the Batavian Republic. In the Barokzaal (Baroque Room) the portraits of four politicians, of whom Schimmelpenninck is one, grace the uniquely decorated ceiling. In the hotel lounge you can relax in one of the wonderful armchairs or sofas. This area is gorgeously decorated in Art Nouveau style. On nice days you can spend the afternoon or evening in the lovely French courtyard, and on rainy days the sunroom will offer you a beautiful view of the garden.

In the stylishly renovated hotel you can enjoy drinks, lunch or dinner. On weekdays between 07:00 and 10:00 guests can make use of the hot and cold breakfast buffet with homemade Burgundian bread. At weekends breakfast is served from 08:00 until 11:00. You'll see the baker preparing the bread as you walk through the buffet area. Furthermore, a breakfast chef will gladly fry an egg for you on a nostalgic stove. The hotel's brasserie is open for drinks, lunch and dinner. The hotel is also known for its delicious High Teas. Schimmelpenninck Huys' very own in-house chocolatier will provide you with a delicious bonbon to accompany your cup of tea or coffee. You can also enjoy a nice drink at the hotel bar.

Hotel Schimmelpenninck Huys is located in the heart of Groningen. The city and its surroundings have much to offer. Groningen is a great place for shopping or for going out. You can take a boat trip in the summer through the old canals or enjoy a drink at one of the city's many outdoor cafés. And upon taking a stroll through the city, be sure not to miss the splendid Martinitoren on the city's central market square: the Grote Markt.

The Schimmelpenninck Huys offers facilities for meetings, presentations, or training courses. And you can soothe your body and mind with a massage or a facial treatment at the beauty salon.

- Part of the hotel has a lift, not all rooms can be accessed via the lift. The lift can be reached via the stairs and is therefore not suitable for disabled guests. There are no rooms on the ground floor.

“Cranky employees and terrible maintenance”
  • Leaving
  • The lady behind the desk was really impolite and cranky. It was like your teacher giving you a hard time when you were young. Blaming us for not understanding the weird parking-system they use. My toilet kept flushing 24 7, you can hear that pretty good. The ceiling in the bathroom had a huge crack and water kept flowing out of that crack landing all over my bathroom. I wanted to file my complaint and there was a man behind the lobby desk that did not speak dutch or english so I was unable to give him my story. Bad, bad, bad

“Not particularly impressed”
  • breakfast was good and included
  • wifi not really reliable. Room was just freezing when I arrived, took one hour for temperature to rise

“A friendly hotel with great character”
  • Friendly staff; beautiful suite (no 7) with a great jacuzzi bath and view to the Martinitoren; delicious bread at breakfast; good central location
  • Noise from outside during some Saturday night celebrations disturbed our sleep. Could do with double glazing on windows.

“Nice hotel in great location”
  • The room was large and the bed was very comfortable. The location is excellent, very close to shops and restaurants.
  • It was difficult to get in and out of the tub to use the shower. I was above the lounge and there was a party with loud music for one of the nights. I also did not think the breakfast was worth the cost.

“Wonderful location and ambience ”
  • Terrific location. Excellent service at the front desk Helpful information. Great jacuzzi Nicely furnished room Comfortable bed
  • Breakfast charge of 16 Euros was exorbitant. Needless to say, we did not have breakfast at the hotel. Room had towels and bathrobe for 1 guest. Additional towels were brought up quickly. Pillows were uncomfortable, seemed like cheap quality. Comforter sheet was very clean but had holes. Wireless internet service was terrible. Each time I went online, I was disconnected after a few minutes and had to reconnect, to be disconnected again. Very disruptive. Maybe the room location was at fault?

“It was a real joy to stay in such a well-kept, well-run hotel”
  • Excellent service and standard of English Beautifully maintained historic building Located in the centre of town Real vaue for money Own bakery adjoining the breakfast room - what could be fresher! The beautifully ornate fixtures in the bathroom
  • Tiny points which prevented me from giving it a 10 TV remote was broken which meant sitting one metre away from TV if you wanted to watch There was no wall mirror in the bathroom, just a pedestal mirror. OK for shaving for me but I can imagine ladies would require something bigger

“very nice hotel”
  • excellent location in the city centre; beautiful historic building and interior; particularly recommendable in summer because of wonderful courtyard/patio; we had a very nice room on third floor with a huge terrasse overlooking the courtyard; the room was simple but spacious and spotless clean; spacious bathroom with bath and shower; excellent breakfast
  • incredibly steep stairs leading to third floor (we had room 51) that require sporty climbing to get to the room (only feasible with light luggage !!); if you choose a twin bed room, be aware that beds are on rolls and drift apart with the slightest movement; very noisy on Friday and Saturday night (young people shouting in the streets - you can hear them even with the windows closed in winter !)
