In the heart of the historic village Hollum you will find the Hotel-Café De Walvisvaarder of Ameland. The name of the hotel is a tribute to the Ameland whalers. Around 1719 the islanders started hunting whales, a risky job but a good source of income. The many Commodore houses on the island remind of this prosperous time. Commodore Barend Hansz caught 151 whales in total.

The hotel serves an extensive breakfast, the times are in consultation. Lunch and dinner is not available in the hotel, but within walking distance you will find some good restaurants in the village of Hollum. The villages Ballum, Nes and Buren also offer excellent dining. On the ground floor is the cosy village pub.

The oldest house of Ameland, dating from 1516, is located at the Johan Bakkerstraat 6, within walking distance of Hotel de Walvisvaarder of Ameland. The Frisian island offers a wide variety of flora and fauna, you will find more than 60 species of birds in different areas. Beaches, marsh and dunes can be viewed in different ways, on horseback, on foot, by bike or from the nearby lighthouse. This tower is from 1880, you can climb 236 steps to reach the head of the 55 meter high lighthouse.
