Within walking distance of Van der Valk Spier is the stunning nature reserve of the Dwingelderveld National Park, where you can take walks through its vast heathlands, woods and meres. An interesting sight is the radio telescope - over 50 years old - which is stood in the middle of this area and towers above the trees. The village of Orvelte, preserved in its original form, is also an absolute must to visit. The towns of Assen and Hoogeveen are only a 15-minute drive away, and great for shopping. There are many tourist attractions in the area that are perfect for families with children; including the Zuidlaren fairy tale park, and of course the Dierenpark Emmen Zoo.
