Hotel Restaurant Bitter en Zoet (Bitter and Sweet) is located in the middle of the beautiful Drenthe countryside. This hotel is housed in the stunningly renovated former hospital complex of Veenhuizen. The complex was originally built to provide care and rehabilitation for orphans, the poor, and vagrants from the big cities. It was later turned into a penal colony. You can learn all about the turbulent history of this complex at the nearby Gevangenismuseum (Prison Museum).

Breakfast is served daily between 08:00 and 10:00 with fresh bread from the hotel's own bakery.The restaurant is open from 12:00 until 21:00, and serves dishes from the Dutch, English and French cuisines. The head chef is renowned for excellent food, prepared with sustainable, regional, seasonal and mostly organic ingredients. The chef uses fresh produce from the Northern Netherlands or own vegetable garden. The hotel lounge is open daily from 08:00 until 22:00, where you can enjoy a good cup of coffee or a tasty drink.

Hotel Restaurant Bitter en Zoet Veenhuizen is surrounded by a vast area of woods, heaths and farmlands and is great for gorgeous walking and cycling trips. You can easily cycle to the beautiful nature reserve Fochteloërveen. A visit to the nearby Gevangenismuseum (Prison Museum) in Veenhuizen is a nice day out. Assen, Drachten and the university town of Groningen are also easy to reach from the hotel.

The elegant spacious double rooms are housed in three former official residences, each with their own name, Toewijding (Devotion), Bitter en Zoet (Bitter and Sweet) and Plichtgevoel (Sense of Duty). Each room has a unique atmosphere as well as good box-spring beds, a flatscreen television, and a bathroom with a shower and/or bath tub and toilet.
