Ypres has a rich history. During WWI, Ypres was surrounded by the German army on three sides, but they did not manage to get past the British line of defence. East of the city lies the most visited monument of Ypres, the Menin Gate, that was built to commemorate the British soldiers that lost their lives here. Their names have been chiseled in the gate's walls.
